Grangetown is one of Cardiff's oldest working-class neighbourhoods, with tightly packed terraced housing that dates predominantly from the late Victorian period. Streets like Penarth Road, Corporation Road and the residential streets around the mosque and community centre consist largely of two and three bedroom terraces built in the 1880s to 1900s. The electrical installations in many of these properties are overdue for attention.

Common electrical work in Grangetown

Consumer unit upgrades are very common here. Many Grangetown properties still have old fuse boards with rewirable fuses and no RCD protection. Replacing these with a modern consumer unit is often the right first step before any other electrical work. It improves safety, brings the property closer to current standards, and is a requirement before other notifiable work can be carried out.

Grangetown has a significant number of landlord-owned properties. We carry out EICRs for landlords in this area regularly. Under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016, all Welsh rental properties require an EICR every 5 years. We issue reports electronically and can also carry out any remedial work that comes out of the report.

The area is close to Cardiff Bay, and we occasionally pick up commercial work on the margins of the Grangetown and Butetown boundary. If you have a commercial premises here, we can help with testing and electrical installation work.
