What Counts as an Electrical Emergency?

Some electrical problems can wait. These ones can't. If any of the following are happening at your property, call us straight away.

Burning smell from a socket or fuse board

A burning plastic smell near a socket outlet, consumer unit, or anywhere on your wiring is a serious warning sign. Don't ignore it and don't wait to see if it goes away.

Sparking or flickering

A spark when you plug something in is sometimes normal. Sparking from inside a socket, or from the consumer unit, is not. Persistent flickering on a circuit is also worth investigating urgently.

Complete or partial power loss

If you've lost power to part of the house and you haven't overloaded a circuit, there may be a fault on the ring circuit or spur. If the whole property has no power, check your neighbours before you call, but if it's just you, ring us.

RCD that won't reset

If the RCD on your consumer unit has tripped and keeps tripping when you try to reset it, there is a fault on that circuit. Forcing it on is dangerous. Call us and we'll find the fault properly.

Flooding near electrical installations

Water and electricity don't mix. If a pipe has burst near a consumer unit, sockets or any other wiring, turn off the mains at the isolator if you can do so safely, then call us. Don't touch any wet electrical fittings.

Exposed live wires

Damaged cables with exposed conductors are a serious risk, especially if there are children or pets in the property. Don't touch them and don't let anyone else near them until we arrive.

What to Do Before the Electrician Arrives

The most important thing is to keep yourself and anyone else in the property safe. Here's what we'd tell you to do while you wait.

  1. Turn off the mains if it's safe to do so.

The main isolator switch is usually at the top of your consumer unit. If you can reach it without touching anything wet or damaged, switch it off. This cuts the supply to the whole property.

  2. Don't use the affected circuit.

If a specific circuit has tripped or you can smell burning from a particular socket, don't plug anything into that circuit. Leave everything off until we've been and diagnosed the fault.

  3. Don't try to fix it yourself.

We know it's tempting, especially if you've watched a few videos online. But live electrical faults are not the place to experiment. You could make the problem worse, or put yourself at serious risk.

  4. Keep children and pets away from the area.

If there are exposed wires or a burning smell, keep everyone well clear. Don't let curiosity get the better of anyone while you wait for us to arrive.

  5. Call 999 if there is any sign of fire.

We are electricians, not fire fighters. If you can see flames or smoke, get everyone out and call the fire service immediately. Only call us once everyone is safe.

What Happens When You Call Us

No complicated booking systems. No holding music. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you pick up the phone.

Your call is answered

We pick up. If for any reason we miss the call, we will ring you back within minutes. At 3am, at the weekend, over Christmas. That's the deal.

We triage over the phone

We'll ask a few quick questions about what's happening. This helps us decide how urgent it is and what tools and parts to bring. We can also give you safety advice while you wait.

An electrician is dispatched

We'll tell you roughly how long we'll be. We aim to be with you as fast as possible, and we'll keep you updated if anything changes.

On-site diagnosis

When we arrive, we'll work through the fault properly. We use test equipment to diagnose exactly what's wrong, not guesswork. We'll explain what we've found before we do anything.

Repair or make safe

Where we can, we'll fix the fault there and then. If a full repair needs to happen in daylight or requires materials we don't have, we'll make everything safe and agree a follow-up time with you. We won't leave you at risk.

Honest Pricing for Emergency Callouts

We're not going to pretend emergency work is the same price as a routine visit. It isn't. But we are completely upfront about it.

Emergency rates apply for out-of-hours callouts. We will tell you the callout charge before we come. There are no surprises when we arrive and no inflated invoice at the end.

If we can fix the fault in the same visit, we'll agree the total cost with you before we start work. If the job needs a return visit, we'll quote for that separately.

We don't use emergency situations to push unnecessary work. If your electrics need a consumer unit upgrade or a rewire, we'll tell you honestly. But we won't scare you into spending money you don't need to spend.

NAPIT-notified work is included in the price for any notifiable repairs. You get a certificate of completion and your local authority is informed automatically.

What's included in every callout

  • Upfront callout charge agreed before we travel
  • Proper fault diagnosis with test equipment
  • Fix or make-safe before we leave
  • NAPIT notification where required
  • No upselling or unnecessary extras
